When I awoke on September 4th, with the house juddering and shimmering, I staggered out of bed, was thrown against the wall, desperately trying to find the phone, to make sure our family in Central Otago was ok as in my dazed state I thought the alpine fault had finally gone and we were getting the tail end of it here.

When I finally got through, “Mum” they said “it’s there! in Christchurch!” we couldn’t believe it.
