April 16th, Duncan had two friends over for the night and I had just started cooking dinner at 5.45 no sooner had I put mince in the microwave to defrost when a large earthquake hit, it was a 5.3 magnatude. Everyone was unhurt but power went out. We checked on the neighbours and everyone again was fine, but well and truly over the shakes. We got the house guests to check with their parents – were they okay? Were they allowed to stay? In the end all was good.
At 6.30pm we decided to take the kids across town to get takeaways for dinner. We drove to Riccarton and found the fish and chip shop open but very busy, so we ordered dinner and waited. It was a long wait and a few small shakes later we got our dinner and ate it in the car on the way home. We still had no power so it was off to bed early for everyone.
In the morning the power was still out so it was a breakfast of cereal and milk for everyone. Power came back on by 11am.
