– 388 Montreal Street, Sydenham, Canterbury, New Zealand

The September quake was all a bit of a dream really. It was such a foreign feeling being woken up by the ground shaking. It took me a while to figure out what was going on. As I was on my own and the phones were out, I turned the radio on to find out what just happened.

I looked out my bedroom window and across the street a brick apartment’s frontage had collapsed luckily the person who lived there was not home that particular night.

Alarms were going off all over the place and I stayed glued to the radio. We were told to conserve water immediately, so I filled up every spare container I had and put in my fridge and began to clean up my pantry – which was now all on my kitchen floor.

Quite a start to the day.
