I’d started Burnside on Friday after we’d decided that we were going to stay in New Zealand, because we were almost going to go back home to England on Thursday the 24th February.
The day of the earthquake was the first time I had brought my good violin to school.
I was upstairs when the shaking happened, and after it had stopped we were told that we were not allowed to go back into the building to collect our stuff. This really annoyed me as my violin was sitting in the music locker room, and I didn’t know whether it was ok.
To top it all off I didn’t have a mobile phone as my one from England didn’t work in New Zealand. So I couldn’t contact my Mum and tell her I was ok.
We spent about an hour and a half on the grass, then my neighbours car pulled up (I was later to learn that our one had nearly run out of petrol). While driving along to go and pick my sister up at university, there was another huge earthquake and I could see the lamp-posts rattling.
Thank goodness our house was ok!
